“Painting is easy when you don’t know how, but very difficult when you do”

Edgar Degas, the man who coined this quote, was a french impressionist painter. Like most of the great impressionists, he was a master of capturing everyday scenes with great fidelity.

Once you’ve been painting for a while, you eventually feel the weight of your own back catalog. Your past successes, how well you’ve managed to capture certain emotions or great compositions. That’s not to mention being a slave to your own technique (Alla Prima, or wet on wet, in my case), and your own style. 

The truth is, as children we don’t worry about any of that, we playfully make marks and lay down color with the innocence and playfulness that really help us discover who we are as artists. We don’t carry the weight of our own past work, that’s why “Painting is easy when you don’t know how, but very difficult when you do”

Edgar Degas, el hombre que acuñó esta cita, fue un pintor impresionista francés. Como la mayoría de los grandes impresionistas, fue un maestro en captar escenas cotidianas con gran fidelidad.

Cuando llevas un tiempo pintando, acabas sintiendo el peso de tu propio catálogo. Tus éxitos pasados, lo bien que has conseguido captar ciertas emociones o grandes composiciones. Eso por no hablar de ser esclavo de tu propia técnica (Alla Prima, o húmedo sobre húmedo, en mi caso), y de tu propio estilo. 

La verdad es que cuando somos niños no nos preocupamos por nada de eso, sino que hacemos marcas y ponemos color de forma lúdica con la inocencia y la alegría que realmente nos ayudan a descubrir quiénes somos como artistas. No cargamos con el peso de nuestro propio trabajo anterior, por eso “Pintar es fácil cuando no sabes cómo hacerlo, pero muy difícil cuando lo haces”
