I love this quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson. Like most of life’s best quotes, it’s easy to understand, but hard to put into practice.
I work and speak to a lot of inexperienced artists who agonize over the fruits of their labor. We feel like if we don’t pick up the guitar and immediately sound like Hendrix that being a guitarist “isn’t my thing”. I confess I feel my eye twitch whenever I hear someone say “(insert creative endeavor) isn’t my thing.”
The truth is, if you think art isn’t your thing, you’re completely right, it isn’t.
BUT if you open yourself up to the possibility that with the right amount of experience you could create pieces you’d be proud of… we’ll you’d be right too.
There’s no room for the defeatist attitude here, you can. Trust me. Why? Because “every artist was first an amateur”
Me encanta esta cita de Ralph Waldo Emerson. Como la mayoría de las mejores citas de la vida, es fácil de entender, pero difícil de poner en práctica.
Trabajo y hablo con muchos artistas inexpertos que agonizan por los frutos de su trabajo. Sentimos que si no cogemos la guitarra e inmediatamente sonamos como Hendrix es que ser guitarrista “no es lo mío”. Confieso que siento un tic en el ojo cada vez que escucho a alguien decir “(inserte esfuerzo creativo) no es lo mío”.
La verdad es que si crees que el arte no es lo tuyo, tienes toda la razón, no lo es.
PERO si te abres a la posibilidad de que con la cantidad adecuada de experiencia puedas crear piezas de las que te sientas orgulloso… también tendrás razón.
Aquí no cabe la actitud derrotista, tú puedes. Confía en mí. ¿Por qué? Porque “todo artista fue primero un aficionado”
