Thomas Merton (the man who coined this quote) was an American monk and spiritual writer. I’m guessing when he was referring to “losing yourself” he was thinking less Eminem and more Rembrandt.

Most art transports you, it helps you lose yourself. I’m using art in the broadest term, music, movies, literature, paintings, dance… you know the feeling you get when you get lost in something.

Self-discovery is what great art does. Great art makes you question your sense of aesthetic beauty, it makes you draw from within to fill in the gaps in the narrative. Great art should be an open question whose answer reveals something about yourself.

Whether you’re leaning further towards Rembrandt or Eminem, “Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.”
